00:00 China: Hu-kin and Butterfly-harp: The hu-kin is a two stringed instrument which is played with a bow. The bow is placed between the two strings ready to move to the upper or lower string. The butterfly harp has short strings played by very small bamboo hammers. The two instruments play the same melody in unison. The melody is based on a pentatonic scale; the complexity of melodic shape is due partly to the microtonal ornamentation. Notice the long phrases and contrasting short phrases. The pattern of phrasing is in sharp contrast to the regularity of Western phrasing.
